Project the Build-a-Body: Respiratory System interactive on the whiteboard. Explain that that today they will explore and assemble a human respiratory system. After, they will review case studies in which they must associate a functional problem within the respiratory system with the affected organ. Read, or invite a volunteer to read, the information about the respiratory system on the left side of the screen. Then choose, but do NOT click, one of the organs listed in the the tray on the right.
Now challenge pairs to come up with a definition for that organ and write it on paper or a small dry erase board. On your signal, instruct each pair to hold up their definitions. Now click the organ and read the definition that displays on the left side of the screen.
For more in-depth game play, display all the responses in the front of the room and have the class analyze them together. After analyzing answers, have pairs work at their own computers or devices to click the organ and drag it to the correct position on the screen. After pairs assemble their respiratory systems, challenge them to solve the case studies.
Model the first one by clicking the Case Studies link on the top right side of the screen. Select the first case study and read, or have a volunteer read, the case study that displays on the left side. Then show them how to answer the question the case study presents by clicking the affected organ.
Have partners complete the other case studies. Encourage them to discuss each case, and consider what they know, before clicking the affected organ. Circulate as students work, listening in on their discussions and strategies, providing support as needed.
Bring the class together to reflect on the organs and problems they explored through the interactive. Have them share what new information they learned.

Begin a discussion about the lungs and respiratory system. This will provide some background before the diagram of the lungs is explained. The lungs are one of the largest organs in the body and allow you to take in oxygen and breath out carbon dioxide.
The lungs are located in the chest and take up a large amount of space. The thoracic cavity ribs protects the lungs. Underneath the lungs is the diaphragm. The diaphragm helps the lungs inhale breath in and exhale breath out. The lungs are not the same size; the left lung is slightly smaller because it needs to allow for room for the heart. As the teacher explains, the students will write the name of each part on the line.
From this activity, the students will learn about the parts of the lungs and the function of each part. The respiratory system is divided into two tracts: upper respiratory tract and lower respiratory tract.
The upper respiratory tract consists of the nose, mouth, pharynx, epiglottis, larynx, and trachea. The lower respiratory tract consists of the bronchial tree and lungs.

If you're like many others, it occurs at least once a day. Being a teacher is a challenging job, to be sure. It's also quite rewarding.
But, of course, our lungs do more than help us calm down during times of stress. They also fill our bodies with oxygen, which is necessary for life. With each breath the air travels down the trachea. As it travels toward your lungs tiny hairs, called cilia, remove any dirt from the air.
It then travels through the bronchi and the bronchioles. Teaching about the respiratory system is rewarding because it helps children see how small responses that they take for granted every day work to keep them alive.

In a previous lesson we discussed the muscular system and prior to this class period the students were to have taken notes about the muscular system, so they have the information they need to answer this prompt successfully, though it will require them to combine what they know about the two separate systems. By responding to this prompt, we are addressing NGSS Crosscutting Concept Systems and System Models - systems interact with other systems and can be part of larger complex systems - because the students are explaining how the respiratory and muscular system interact and function as a part of the body.
As the students write, I circulate through the room to review their responses. During this time, I ask some students to elaborate on their explanation while I help others determine the connection between the two systems. Once the students have had a chance to write down their thoughts, I ask for volunteers to share their responses with the class. While the students share their ideas, I use the LCD projector to display a diagram of the respiratory system and point out the diaphragm.
We refer to the diagram as we review the function of the diaphragm, specifically how it moves and what happens to the the lungs as it moves. The students also completed the review questions as homework. I lead the students in a review of the notes by asking them to explain the structures of the respiratory system and the functions of each structure.
We begin by discussing the nose and I ask the students if the nose is associated with any other body system. The students are able to recognize that the olfactory cells in the nose help to connect it to the nervous system.
Breathe In, Breathe Out: The Respiratory System
As we review the other parts of the respiratory system, I move through this Respiratory System Presentationto provide students with additional visuals of the structures we are discussing. I also use the presentation to remind the students of the difference between respiration and breathing. We discussed respiration at the beginning of the year, so this is a great opportunity to review the information with the students to help ensure retention of the material.
Our review of the presentation addresses NGSS MS-LS - Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells. After we have reviewed the notes, students complete a bulletin board labeling activity.
I have placed a blank respiratory system diagram on a bulletin board and I give each group one labeled notecard. The labels on the notecards are nasal cavity, trachea, pharynx, larynx, primary bronchi, and lungs. Group members are given a couple of minutes to discuss and reach consensus about where their notecard should be placed on the bulletin board. I then ask the class where air enters the respiratory system and ask the group that has the correct card to bring it up and place it on the board.
I continue naming the function, awaiting students identification of the "form" as we work our way to the lungs. I start with this basic model with the intent that students will modify the model to include a trachea, another lung, etc.
Creating the model in this lesson helps the students better understand the role of the diaphragm in the respiratory system and addresses NGSS SP2 - Developing and using models. Once we have reviewed the lab instructions, I use a modified version of the Line Up strategy to place students in their lab groups. I give each student a notecard that has the name of one of the respiratory organs and have them form groups by finding one of each of the structures in the respiratory system. This ties directly to the respiratory system bulletin board activity and to the first question on the respiratory system model worksheet, creating a repetitive review of the structures of the respiratory system.
In order to enter the lab and begin working, the students check in with me to make sure that their group contains the correct structures.
If the group is not correct, I send them back to try again. In the lab, the students answer the first question and are then able to begin building their model.The procedure for constructing a working model of the respiratory system is revealed in this resource. A wonderful approach would be to have biology learners work in pairs to create a model and write the suggested paragraph explaining how it works. Middle and high schoolers could include the differences in air pressure that are in action.
